Recently, I was asked to share my best advice with UT Arlington graduates and I thought some of it may resonate with you as well.
1. Smile and say the first hello.
People remember how you make them feel. A warm smile and introducing yourself can create opportunities you never expected. Meet new people, build trust, and make real connections. Use LinkedIn to stay in touch, and take photos so you remember who you met. Relationships will open doors for you—sometimes when you least expect it.
2. Stay connected and don’t be afraid to ask for advice.
Being vulnerable isn’t a weakness—it shows that you respect others and want to learn. If you’re unsure about something, don’t hesitate to ask for advice. The strongest connections come when people help each other. Offer and receive R.O.C.K.S.—Resources, Opportunities, Connections, Knowledge, and Support. And don’t forget to think about what’s on your own R.O.C.K.S. wishlist!
3. Don’t overthink things—mistakes happen.
Nobody is perfect. We all mess up. What matters is how you respond when things don’t go as planned. Surround yourself with people who encourage you, celebrate your wins, and support you when you fall. That’s true belonging—being accepted for who you are.
When you meet new people, be ready to share your thoughts. A simple way to start is using “I like, I wish, I wonder.” What do you like? What do you wish you knew more about? What are you wondering now? This helps you stay curious and engaged.
And when fear or doubt creeps in, remember Mel Robbins’ advice: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1—take that step forward!
Leave every place better than you found it. Make a difference in someone’s life. Keep learning, keep growing, and never stop believing in yourself.
