How Can You Thrive & Stay Relevant in the Age of AI?
At the ALIVE Career Conference panel on “The Future of Work: Thriving in the Age of AI“, I shared that human skills are the edge that will grow your career: caring, connection, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and cross-functional collaboration.
Three examples of how I intentionally grow my human skills and connections:
- ✅ Caring: My “Detail > Deed > Their Delight” approach: I listen carefully and notice one detail about a new connection that seemed important to them. Then I do one small thing to show I remembered what they shared or wished for, and I watch their delight. I aim for delight, not satisfaction, because that’s what creates superfans.
- ✅ Critical thinking: Each time AI gives me an answer, I ask: What’s missing? Who would disagree and why? What are your top 5 background questions you need answered to give me a better answer? It helps me think deeper as a thought partner.
- ✅ Connection: Have a chat with someone outside your team or industry, because it widens your perspective and sparks innovation and new ideas.
Despite AI, here’s why I’m hopeful about the future of work: My grandparents came to New York from China with nothing. They learned the hand laundry business and grew their businesses and family through hard work and a focus on education. No one handed them a playbook; they built something of their own by building relationships, community, and family.
When I started my coaching and consulting business in January 2020, after a fabulous 30-year career at PwC, I couldn’t have prepared for a pandemic. There was no playbook. The businesses and people who did best through those years didn’t have the most tools. They had the strongest relationships.
AI gives me back time. As a super talent gardener and inclusion connector, I reinvest it in people.
